Magazine Revenue

Revenue

Magazines receive revenue from

. Circulation overprice - (£5.50 for mojo in 2018)

. Advertising (in MOJO mostly live or recorded music with some fashion and advertising

. Mass advertising

. Cross promotion for the other Bauer media such as empire

. Sponsored content and product placement for example, 'MOJO listens to all music on Roksan Empire'

How do they use different funding models to generate income?

Product placement - when a product is used in a film/music video/tv show

. The print magazine industry is suffering from falling advertising revenues and falling circulations as many go online.

. Their response has been to diversify as much as possible - events are a good examples of this and to move forward online magazines.

. Sponsored content and product Placement for example 'MOJO listens to all its music on Roksan equipment'.

. Events E.G. Vogue runs fashion events, GQ runs comedy events.

Even in a music video if a logo is far in the background it COUNTS as PRODUCT PLACEMENT

FUNDING

.Bauer Media is a German conglomerate. Nowadays magazines publishing is in the hands of a few international companies, which is an example of Globalisation.

For example : BBC Gardeners world is owned by Hubert Burda Media but is actually published globally by a German Magazine publisher.

Questions MOJO Magazine :

What are the advertisements?

Within MOJO magazines Pink Floyd you can see that they are advertising HMV which sell records which can be targeted to white men who are older and link with Pink Floyd as the records all contain white males who also compliment Pink Floyd. At the top of the magazine page it also exclaims RECOMMENDED which mean that those specific records are the best that you can listen to of the target audience.

Is there any product placement?

Within on of the first pages you can see that there is product placement of advertisement for Arctic Mokeys which own music gear that can be sold to people who are into music. EMP are also in this magazine and they offer merchandise  products which targets secondary target audiences. Towards the back of the magazine on the very last page we can see that planet rock is advertised. This is done because Bauer Media owns planet rock as well as MOJO so  by doing this they are making more money as they are doing cross-promotion.

Is the media product selling itself to its audience?

Yes it is because within the magazine there is advertisement for two other magazines owned by Bauer Media which means that they are cross promoting other magazines such as Empire and planet rock.

  1. When referring to the different texts we have studied, it won't help the examiner if you just say "Pink Floyd" magazine. You MUST refer to the exact publication.

    Pink Floyd edition - MOJO 296 – July 2018: Pink Floyd 50
    Sex Pistols edition - MOJO 286 / September 2017

Please respond to this comment so that I know you have understood. It may help to write these down in a new blog post.

I think you have missed out a little bit of work with regards to what is available on the MOJO website - https://www.mojo4music.com

Please visit the website and within this blog post explain what is available online, how subscriptions help with funding and how it targets a different audience (who are they, explain demographics/NRS)
