Bauer Media

Conglomerates like Bauer and Hearst Communications are still primarily print publishers with some associated television and radio.
MOJO is published by Bauer Media.
This company owns over 600 magazines, including two other UK music magazines – Q and Kerrang! The company has diversified the MOJO brand, offering mojo4music.com online in order to reduce the risk of only operating in one media form.

The company is itself diversified, with ownership of magazines, websites, radio stations and music television channels, which may help protect it from declining audiences for magazines

Bauer Media Group is a diversified media conglomerate because they have a wide range of magazines owned which target many different audiences, age groups and ethnicities which allows a very wide diversity in multiculturalism and things like Domination by women.
For example, a magazine like TV choice focuses to keep the media updated on all the gossip that goes on television on shows such as X Factor , Strictly come dancing ETC. whereas a magazine owned by Bauer Media such as RIDE focuses on the media behind the racing world of motorcycles and competitive racing which keeps the audience updated.

‘Bauer Media Group is a globalised company because the media group has a wide amount of magazines worldwide advertising to other countries magazines that the company owns, for example Bauer Media owns Rock Planet the magazine owns Empire as well as MOJO this means that a lot of cross promotion within their magazines is used to advertise their magazines and make more money as well as apply to other target audiences. A German company also owns Bauer Media and publishes the magazines world wide for all countries to read for example magazines would be released in different countries at specific times due to time zones. This means other countries get the magazine first.

1950's - 1960's

Melody maker / New musical express

. Largely uncritical of musicians' output - everything was always good!

. Content: mainly charts and singles, gig listings,

Changes in society in the 1960s with the arrival of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, drug culture of the 1960s - changed the nature of music and music writing

The new musical express was first published in 1952

Rolling stones was created by Jann Wenner in the 1960s, a fortnightly publication which contained a mixture of current affairs, celebrity interviews and coverage of the music industry its appeal in lay in the journalists addressed the youth audience.

1970s

Early 1970s - First of all: "Glam Rock" - Sweet, mud, slade, t rex.

And then "Prog. Rock" - Pink Floyd, Emmerson lake palmer.

Music papers still largely uncritical of groups until the Prog Rock bands begin to spend too much money on staging, lighting and lasers, etc.

NME changed its style to meet punk head on.

New writers were recruited from the magazine's own readership, with ads like 'wanted : hip young gun slingers'. Julie Burchill became a top NME reporter overnight. (Could be bias however)

1978

Smash hits launched a new glossy magazine catering for a younger audience in a smaller magazine format. Its focus was on "trivia" - favourite colours, food, pop-musicians' lifestyles, etc.

It included - polls, letters, surveys, fan club information - keeps in touch with readership - what do they want? Lyrics, posters, free gifts on the cover.

Early 1980s

Style in pop music becomes more important than content: make-up, clothes, the video, fashion and hair.

Independent music labels wanted their own voice and began producing fanzines. these fanzines were often typed, photocopied and distributed at concerts or by subscription.

Despite the handmade appearance this encouraged a whole new generation of writers, photographers and cartoonists to contribute.

Magazines became much more about image and hair styles and began to care more about tight faces (fonts for headline) less about music and more about looks.

1990s

New technologies began to emerge. Music videos became popular which began to change many aspects of the ways in which the music is consumed.

Every single comes with a video sometimes more money is spent on the video than the single.

launch of MTV the first TV market for music videos - a little known band could make lots of money and impact a well made video.

In 1993 first ever edition of MOJO

Magazine Ownership and NRS

1. How are magazine audiences categorised?
The magazine audiences are categorised based on age

group varying from 15-35 then 35+ the a,out of viewers are then worked out in a percentage and then totalled to overall see wether the age group for male or for female people are higher.

Overall the females were higher for more viewers which

suggests that the viewership applies to most women from the
age of 35+
2. How is readership and consumption measured?

Readership is an estimate of how many readers a publication has. As most publications
have more than one reader per copy, the NRS readership estimate is very different from the
circulation count.

Circulation is a count of how many copies of a particular publication are distributed.
Circulation audits are provided by the Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC).

3. How audiences are identified?

Audiences can be identified by looking into the data of the magazine and seeing what
specific age groups and genders read the magazine the most. By doing this you can
tell what kind of audience is reading the magazine, in MOJO magazines case its
mostly white middle ages males

Media Industries And Media Audiences (ENTIRE MOJO EDITION)

 Multiculturalism

LGBTQ

  Dominated by women

RED BOX : How does this representation link to the demographic? Think: age, brand loyalty?

The representation in the main front cover is shown to be stereotypical to older white men, however as you begin to read on through the magazine you begin to see a wide range of multiculturalism. This then shows that MOJO magazine shows loyalty to everyone by showing a wide range of multiculturalism through the demographic of the front cover. However in the actual magazine there is very little amounts of the magazine dominated by women which could suggest that the stereotype of white men is still there but not as much as it used to be.

BLACK BOX : How might audiences interpret the same magazines very differently and how might these differences reflect both social and individual differences?

The audience may interpret the same magazine differently for several reasons, for example the magazine could be specifically aimed to send a certain message  like if you have a boyband on the front cover and its mixed with different ethnicities and races, it shows a good amount of multicultural impact onto the reader and could possibly influence them to act differently towards other ethnicities and races for the better as in todays society there is still lots of racism. So by doing this you are influencing older men today to become more accepting of change and become and individually better person overall.

Front Cover Analysis

. Use the 'Activity 4 - Comparing Media Language  in Music Magazines' help sheet to help you!

Compare One of the front covers to a magazine of your own choice. (500 WORDS)

Mojo Magazines front cover on the sex pistols can compare to the top of the pops front cover on Rita Ora due to reasons as follows.

Within Mojo Magazines front cover based on the sex pistols we see a very bold and plain background which can show that the magazine is trying to emphasise the uniqueness and power of who is in the main image which is one of the members of the sex pistols this compares to Mojo Magazines front cover as we can see a completely different contrast of colours which are very vibrant unlike Mojo Magazine which in this front cover focuses on very dull and boring colour schemes.

The cover lines within Mojo Magazines front cover are directed at an older age group which found the sex pistols to be more up to date for them which tells us that the age group must be directed to an older group as teenagers would not know who the sex pistols are. However in Top of the pops we see that the cover lines are very directed and up to date to a younger teenage audience directly focused more towards  girls which will attract greater attention as the amount of girls compared to the older age group would get more publicity and make more money from the magazines.

Similarly both magazines try to entice the reader by using their cover lines to attract the readers direct attentions to what is in the magazine itself for each specific target audience for example teenagers, girls, men Etc this means that the magazines are trying to entice the reader to continue reading the magazine to gain better publicity and can help them to make a greater profit from their magazines.

Within Top of the pops magazine you can see  lots of modern and trendy items and pictures on the front to which allows the magazine to attract a younger target audience as the people in the pictures are generally more child friendly and the reason this is so good for the magazine is because when there are children who want a magazine the parents are there as well so they will pay to get their kids the magazines.
This is different however in Mojo Magazine as we dont see anything to flashy and only in formation on other artists and song writers as well as some news about their lives and tips on how to become like them. There is also not much in the aspect of pictures of celebrities and is very bold and dull which could be done to show the uniqueness of the person in the main image.

Overall there are many things that can be compared to from each magazine and can represent things such as different age groups and target audiences as you can see within both magazines as they show very different colour schemes and different styles of media and music within the contents of the magazines that they focus on.
