1.How can magazines be aimed at a range of audiences? (For example, MOJO is aimed at a range of audience e.g a more niche, older, predominantly male audience with an average age of 41) (5marks)
Magazines can be aimed at a range of audiences by showing diversification within their magazines, for example Top Of The Pops is a magazine which directly focuses on the younger age group and has a target audience of roughly 15-18 which means that within their magazines they are going to focus on the latest fashion trends and whats new and up to date. Magazines could then include things such as older bands and artists to keep the magazines with a wide range of diversity to target multiple audiences.
2.State one audience category that is more likely to read MOJO (go into detail about demographic & NRS) (5 marks)
The audience that is most likely to read MOJO are predominantly older males aged between 30-40 years old. MOJO promotes male rock artists within the genre therefore stereotypically male readers are more likely to enjoy this type of content. Mojo magazine tends to gain readership to a middle class audience as it contains some aspects of a quality monthly (high quality magazines) however is only semi glossy and has light weight paper so it is read by working class people too as it is affordable. The NRS grade for MOJO tends to be ABC1 as the quality is high and the magazine itself costs £5.50 per month.
3.Explain how readers may get pleasure from reading Magazines. You may wish to refer to the Uses & Gratifications theory (10 marks)
By reading magazines a reader can get a sense of welcoming as in school for example they could be getting bullied and feel that there only way of connecting is by reading the magazines that gives tips on things such as fashion and music. People also enjoy the magazines as they give a wide range of ides on how to enjoy life and what is new. for example mojo advertise a bunch of fashionable clothing aswell as contradicting by talking about older topics such as older songs or older music in general. This shows the diversity and change that MOJO are trying to implement on their target audiences and how they are trying to change them. This then leads on to mojo showing within its magazines advertisements to other types of genres that their magazines have worked on such as planet rock which focuses on a younger age group and a more rock based target audience.
4.Analyse the representation of musicians, from anyMOJO Magazine front cover you have studied.(10marks)
Within the MOJO cover of Pink Floyd we see the band standing together all equally with a spectrum of colours around them. This could show equality as a rainbow means peace however on the actual cover we see no diversity of race and there is no female domination within the front cover, however as you go into the magazine it becomes a different story. In The pink Floyd cover the band is represented as a stereotypical white male band from the 60's. This shows the diversification within MOJO medias magazines and how mojo applies to different audiences and shows a contrasting demographic as in other mojo magazines we see different target audiences which can clearly link to the representation of the musician on the front cover.
5.Identify the regulator for Magazines in the UK (1 mark)
IPSO Is the regulator for the magazines in the UK
6.State two ways that a print magazine can gain revenue(2 marks)
.Subscriptions to the magazine monthly is a way.
.Advertisement to other areas e.g. online such as Bauer Media

ReplyDeleteNot a bad response, remember magazines also promote their websites and provide free gifts for their readers.

The question asks state one audience category that is more likely to read MOJO. I am totally confused by your response. Your first sentence makes no sense at all.
Where your response says “the demographic for MOJO as we see generally an older age group being targeted rather than a younger age group”, if you reword so that it makes sense then that would be a good start.
5 mark response:
The audience that is most likely to read MOJO are predominantly older males aged between ??? (You should know this!) MOJO promotes male rock artists within the genre therefore stereotypically male readers are more likely to enjoy this type of content. Mojo magazine tends to gain readership to a middle class audience as it contains some aspects of a quality monthly (high quality magazines) however is only semi glossy and has light weight paper so it is read by working class people too as it is affordable. Your response is incredibly confused and you have lost the structure here.
As this is worth 10 marks, you could have just explained 2/3 different parts of the theory e.g. Entertainment, Escapism, Social Interaction and then discussed how magazines link to these parts of the theory.
4. 5/10
Again, you MUST refer the specific issue.
The first half of your response is very good and explained well. The second half is not answering the question, nor is it correct – “This shows the diversification within MOJO medias magazines and how mojo applies to different audiences and shows a contrasting demographic as in other mojo magazines we see different target audiences which can clearly link to the representation of the musician on the front cover”.
ALL of the covers target the SAME target audience, that’s why MOJO has such a loyal fanbase.

Advertisments to other areas doesn’t quite make sense. What you want to say is “By advertising products within their magazines and gaining money from advertisers”
Subscriptions is correct. How about monthly sales at £5.50 per issue?
Total = 14/33 Level 4. This is one level about your level 3 target, which is good HOWEVER based on your current grades which are much higher, I know you can do better. You must must MUST read your responses and read the question properly. As you will be writing in the exam, don’t forget to highlight/circle/underline key words.
I’m not going to ask you to reflect and perfect this exam as you will be revising from it/rewriting your responses when we come to our revision term. I DO however need you to read very carefully what I have said in response to all your answers.
Miss Crader
I was pretty confused on what to actually do for some of the questions I.E 2 and 3 and I feel partially that it was because I missed the actual lessons so I had a harder time actually understanding what to do(hence why they were both pretty short answers), ill try to improve on my mistakes in other questions and make sure not to mess up like that in exams
ReplyDeleteI just realised that on question 2 the sentence that I wrote for some reason came out completely jumbled and makes no sense at all and a part of it got cut out that leaded into the demographic. As for question 3 I think I just read the question wrong and in general was confused on what to write as I didn't understand at all
