Are the representations dominated by how people look rather than what they do?
In the sex pistols front cover there is a version of reality that represents social groups back in the 60's as we can see that the types of clothing and colour of hair are very bright and vibrant which means that they are trying to relate to the swinging 60's and how there was things such as flower power for example which represented peace and a spectrum of colours. In the pink Floyd cover we can also see a spectrum of colours such as a rainbow to represent peace and equality among people aswell as trying to overlay onto people that there is a version of reality that is equal and peaceful and happy like in the 60's
•What are the stereotypical representations? Why have they been used?
•What are the counter-stereotypical representations? Why have they been used?
Within The Sex Pistols we can see a stereotypical representation of people within the 60's as in the 60's people would typically wear very bright and vibrant colour scheme to look hip and cool at the time however there is a counter stereotype within the front cover as we see the main image of the person doesn't look stereotypically happy but rather formal and almost concerned which shows a sense of realism to the actual world. In pink Floyd we can then also see the stereotypical representation of people within the 60's as that is what time they are from as we can see a wide spectrum of colours as a rainbow which if you were to look at images with colour from the 60's you would see very similar themes and representations of the 60's.
•Are people of colour present or absent?
•If absent, is this because they are excluded in favourof white people?
•If present, do the representations reflect traditional stereotypes? Do they reflect the diversity of people of colour in a multicultural society?
Within the Sex Pistols front cover we can see that there is not really any multiculturalism within the front cover and simply looks to stereotype white men and women in the past. This could also be because within the time black people were not seen as very welcome. In Pink Floyd we also do not see any multiculturalism and only see that the band within pink Floyd are only white men however does include Pattie smith who is a women which does then show female domination through the years slowly increasing.
•Are LGBT people present or absent? If absent, is this because they are still excluded in favourof straight people?
If present, do the representations reflect traditional stereotypes or do they reflect the diversity of roles LGBT people play in contemporary society?
Within both magazine front covers we can see the exclusion of LGBT people and the inclusion of only straight people, this could be potentially because of the time where LGBT wasn't welcome in society however is in todays society.
•Are women present or absent? If absent, is this because they are still excluded in favourof men?
•If present, do the representations reflect traditional housewife/mother/sex objectsor do they reflect the diversity of roles women play in post-feminist society?
•Do the representations play with gender and sexual identities?
In the Sex Pistols front cover we can see that women are present which suggests equality and women rights as there is a sense of equality trying tone conveyed by the magazine. This representation does not stereotypically reflect traditional objects as we can see that she is singing in a band as an equal to show independence. In Pink Floyd we can also see there are women in the magazine to equality and gender neutrality which suggests that they have an equal role in society.

Jamie, I'm a little confused!
ReplyDeleteEither you haven't uploaded this properly or these is A LOT missing. Every single representation question must be answered.
Additionally...where are your media language questions and answers?
Please reply to this comment.
Miss Crader.
Hi miss I think I said in class that I misunderstood it and only did that as well as the 500 words and thought that all of the questions were actually meant to be summarised into one because on the PowerPoint it says look at example which was done like how I did this. I likely have missed something and if I have can you please let me know what ive missed and ill do them for next time you check blogs - Jamie
ReplyDeleteI think you've understood now Jamie, thank you!
DeleteAlso for the Media Language u completely have redone it but im still confused what ive missed of this because on the powerpoint I just see a list of points about representation and not any actual questions
ReplyDeleteOk Jamie, something that's really REALLY important here.
DeleteYES the artists were popular within 1960, but the magazines were published in 2017 & 2018. So the content reflects the social times within the 1960s, but the magazines themselves were not published in 1960. You also MUST link back representations to the target audience of the magazine.
