Within Little Mix 'Black Magic we see that Theoretical Framework is used to create representation of stereotype and challenge them. We see a narrative form through the video and as we progress through it, we also start to see representations of other stereotypes that are challenging each other E.G. The Asian boy is attractive and cool but the stereotype of Asian people are that they are nerdy and smart.
The Theoretical Framework here is used to show others that the way people see you doesn't mean that you have to act that specific way, like the Asian stereotype. We also see that by doing this people will have a preferred reading of this video as this allows people to gain the self confidence to stand up for their selves and be independent.
The Vamps 'Somebody to you' also uses Theoretical Framework to create a representation of specific stereotypes and not only challenge but also supports them.
In the music video we see that there is a relationship brewing between the lead singer and the main girl within the group of friends. The girl (who is from Austin and Ally) is represented as having the ideal body image of a woman as they all looked underweight. This can be seen as a oppositional reading as some girls will stat to starve their selves and eventually could become anorexic.
2. How and why might audiences base themselves on the celebrities within the music videos you have studied?
Audiences that watch Little Mix and The Vamps base themselves on the way the that they see the people that they idolise within the video and how they act throughout it.
Many girls between the age of 12-16 will use an preferred reading to take influence of the clothes that the main singer wears and what the women wear within this video. However if someone is obese who watches this and wants to wear revealing clothing, they may feel intimidated by the ideal image of the women within the music video and therefore will try to become less obese and possibly take it to an extreme and become anorexic.
Little Mix also change their fashion VIA the magic within the video which relates to girls who are shy and unsure about fashion, this can lead to them following in Little Mix's footsteps and there fore could start to wear very revealing clothing and people may find them very attractive and thus causing them to become popular and get what they wanted.
3. Does the video portray people in stereotypical ways? Are these reflections of real people or are they just one-sided characters?
Within Little Mix's 'Black Magic' there are many stereotypes that the audience can see throughout the video. Little Mix uses a variety of stereotype within their music video such as Geeks which can be seen as the outcasts of the music video that nobody likes. However when they gain access to the magic from the book they become popular girls who everyone looks up to. This can be seen as a one-sided stereotype as in real life you can't simply use magic to get popular, its alot more complicated.
In The Vamps 'Somebody to you' we see the ideal body type of women used as a stereotype to show the audience how within the media the ideal woman looks like. This can be seen as a very one- sided stereotype as women do not realistically look ideal, however within this video they are represented as to be very thin and underweight. This can cause women to make themselves feel insecure about their weight or possibly worse.
4. Consider the setting - why did the director choose this location or setting?
Within Little Mix's 'Black Magic' the setting of the video is located within a typical American high school. This is a key location for the lyrics of the music video to link back to what actually happens in the video and the location itself. The reason that the director chose the location of a typical high school is because the music video is targeted at teenage girls aged 12-16 so the video is very relatable to teenage girls who are going through similar problems as Little Mix within this video. This allows girls to know that they are not alone and that others feel the same about the same situations.
In The Vamps 'Somebody To You' we see the setting of the music video based around a beach which has the connotation of happiness and fun. This says alot about what type of music video this is as we already know that due to the bright lights and being at the beach in the sun, that this will be a very chilled out music video. The reason the director chose this location is so that the audience who watch the music video know that The Vamps are a very chilled back band who enjoy life and its perks.
Q1) 5/10
ReplyDeleteThe theoretical is Language, Audience, Representation and Industry. You have covered some of these elements, but you have been quite vague with your answer. If you make a point (i.e. the Asain character) ensure that you explain how he is represented through the media language (costume, use of close-ups etc.) as that leads on nicely to your explanation about the stereotype.
Your second paragraph is heavily focused on audience interpretations. But remember the question asks you to focus on the theoretical framework (all of LARI). Additionally, the girls don’t look underweight, however they are stereotypically represented as having the ‘perfect’ body image.
Q2) 7/10
This response is clearer than your first and you have answered the question well. Ensure that you reference the title of both music videos/bands within your answer.
Your second paragraph could be explained further.
TARGET: Work on using media terminology to gain higher marks.
Well done Jamie.
Q3) 8/10 A very strong answer, well done Jamie. Be careful though, the girls in The Vamps’ music video are not underweight. they are stereotypically represented as having the ‘perfect’ body image.
TARGET: Work on using media terminology to gain higher marks.
Q4) 10/10
Fantastic answer Jamie! You’ve considered the target audience, used terminology and referenced both music videos.
